Classes

Learning and teaching are two of my passions.  I have been a student of the forged blade for over 15 years now.  It has been a true privilege to learn from some of the best master blade smiths in the world.  Many of my years in Nicaragua were spent teaching blacksmithing and bladesmithing because I feel it is my duty to carry on the craft and hand it over to others who are willing to learn.  I want to continue to offer this experience and these skills to others.  For this reason I am starting to give blacksmithing and bladesmithing classes in my shop here in Trussville, Alabama.

Blacksmithing:

In this one-day Intro to Blacksmithing class, students will have a blast learning to forge iron like it has been done for centuries! They will get to take raw iron bars and manipulate them into useful tools or decorative ironwork to adorn a home, using the heat of the forge and the ding of the hammer and anvil. Students will learn management of a coal forge, proper hand-forging techniques, and the use of various tools in a blacksmith shop.  This one-day course will only whet your appetite for more time behind an anvil and I hope it sparks the interest of many generations of smiths!

Along the way they will learn the ins and outs of a propane forge, proper hammer technique, blade geometry, blade finishing, metallurgy, style variation in knives, handle construction and final sharpening. Students will have access to a well equipped shop and a teacher who loves to create. All anyone will have to bring with them is a desire to learn.
